Pilates, originally called Contrology, is a system of exercises created by Joseph Pilates in the 20th century. It is full body workout that will build your strength, balance, flexibility, and stamina. Joseph himself said his system of exercises "develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit." These exercises can be practiced on Pilates apparatus like the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair and also on the mat.

The 6-Week Introduction to Equipment Series will prepare you for everything you need to know to be approved for and enter Level 1 Group Equipment classes.
Find out more about the 6-Week Series here.
The Reformer Fundamentals class is a thorough and slower-paced introduction and review of the reformer, and serves as a precursor to the Equipment Level 1 classes at PCC.
If you'd like to take group equipment classes, this fundamentals class is how we determine whether you're equipped to hop into Level 1 group equipment classes, or if a couple more fundamentals classes would help to feel fully safe and prepared for Level 1's.
Community Classes are a mix of Tower and Mat. This class will make use of the springs on the Wall Tower and can incorporate Magic Circles and Hand Weights. Community Classes are typically taught by Pilates Teachers in Training after they have completed 200hrs of course work. This class is great for those who take Pilates mat classes and would like to add some springs to their routine. Even if you haven't taken a Pilates class before - Community Classes are open to all.
Joseph Pilates was born in 1883 near Dusseldorf, Germany, with health problems from rickets to asthma. As a result, he dedicated his life to improving his physical strength and wellbeing, excelling in gymnastics, boxing, and other forms of movement. During WW1 Joseph was in England and was put in an internment camp with other Germans. This is where his method of Contrology began to really take shape, with influences from numerous interests of Joe's, from yoga to the behavior of animals. After the war, Joseph briefly went back to Germany but eventually found himself in New York City in 1926. He opened his studio on Eighth Ave the same year and began teaching and refining Contrology.
