The Oov places the body in an anatomically correct, neutral position to facilitate efficient movement. It helps elongate the spine, relieving pressure on discs, while building strength and stability and increasing range of motion in the shoulders and hips. The principles and goals of the Oov system coordinate well with Pilates. Both develop a strong, stable core as the foundation of movement. Oov training can improve performance in any physical activity. Clients can combine Oov training with Pilates lessons or devote their entire lesson to Oov.
Why is the Oov so unique?
The Oov is an unstable 3-dimensional apparatus constructed from a pliable material. It can rock side-to-side and front-to-back. This allows you to work on rotational stability even if you seem to be focused on, for example, shoulder mobility. Traditional mat work is only 2-dimensional.
The Oov provides constant feedback because of its unusual construction. Everyone learns best by doing. If you are less stable on one side of your body and begin to tip over, your brain will try to help you find and use the correct muscles and alignment to avoid falling off. This correction will happen much faster and more efficiently than a trainer using words to explain what you should do.
What does an Oov lesson look like?
You will use weights, resistance bands, and soft 8”-diameter balls in Oov sessions. The set up for an Oov exercise can be lying on your back, stomach, or side. You might sit on top of the thick part of it or sit in the lowest part of it. You can stand on the very top of the thick section or in the lowest section. The Oov can be used for some Pilates exercises, or the Pilates apparatus can be used in a way that is unique to the Oov.
How do I get started?
We recommend that you schedule an individual session for your introduction to the Oov. This will allow the trainer to devote all her attention to help you learn how to get on it, decide which weights you should use, learn the basic movements, and understand both the needs of your body and what personal goals you want to achieve. Then, if you come to a class you’ll be able to work more independently and with confidence.
